On Trauma pt. 1
There is likely a lot of research on the correlation of addiction, alcoholism, and trauma. Almost every heavy drinker I know has either one big event or a series of small tragedies that has lead them to the bottle. This is not to say that everyone who lives through turmoil and trauma will become a drinker, an addict. But it’s something a lot of us share. Those of us who become bar flies though I think are using the bottle as a middle man, a conduit to what we really want: human contact. We are looking for the love and emotional support that we perceive we are missing at home. The bar becomes a form of home. A family of regulars who are there to commiserate and cheer us on. The only sin we could commit would be the one that tears the family apart: sobriety.
